Papasan Cushion

Papasan Cushions: For Year Round Comfort

Author: Joanne Dorin

A papasan chair has been popular during different eras in the United States since it debuted in the 1950s. Even though many would associate a papasan chair with the 1970s, they have been available for decades and are still easily found today. To be a functional piece of furniture, a papasan chair must have a papasan cushion. Papasan cushions come in a variety of prices, and you can choose from many different fabrics and textures when choosing your cushion.

Today, most modern papasan chairs will be anywhere from 35 to 60 in diameter. Some older varieties may have different sizes, and with these you will probably have to have a cushion custom made. Papasan chairs are a round, bowl shaped chair made of rattan that allows the user to feel as if they are burrowing down into the chair.

A papasan chair has a unique quality in that it almost engulfs you all around while you are sitting on it. The bowl itself perches quite securely on top of a round base. The base has a larger opening at the top, where the seat is placed. Since the base and the chair itself are not permanently attached, the angle of the chair can be tilted in a variety of ways. Papasan chairs are usually sold with a cushion, but occasionally you may need to replace the cushion.

Papasan chairs have even migrated to the great outdoors and can be found made of materials that can withstand the rigors of summer weather. These are usually either made of plastic molded to resemble rattan or rattan that has been coated with a finish to withstand the rain and heat. Papasan cushions for outdoor use are also available. These are usually made of materials that will stand up to harsh weather as well. These chairs can be a good option for outdoor furniture if you are looking for something a little different.

The only downside to most kinds of papasan cushions is the filling they are usually stuffed with. Instead of being solid foam, they are usually filled with a shredded filling such as shredded polyester fibers. As a result, the filling can become somewhat compacted over time and may need to be fluffed up occasionally for maximum comfort. Some papasan cushions are filled with a higher quality filling, so do your research to find the best cushion for your situation.

If you have never tried a papasan chair before, make sure you test drive a few to get an idea of how they feel before you buy one. Some people just will not like the way they feel, while others will love them and prefer them to recliners or other types of chairs. Papasan chairs are quite reasonably priced, and if you find one that you like, it is likely that you will be able to afford it.
